Firstly we read the Lorax by Dr Seuss. This prompted a lot of discussion, and ideas. Next we asked questions about the book. We then went onto classifying the ideas into groups, and looked at some of the main themes and ideas running through our questions. Finally we looked back at all our themes and ideas to come up with a philosophical question.
We found coming up with a philosophical question quite difficult, as so many of the ideas prompted more and more thoughts.
Please consider the question we came up with. Really think about the question, and as in a 'thinking community', post your comments and ideas. I think it is really important to remember to read other postings and respond to them, as well as prompting new thoughts.
Here are a few guidelines to help with your philosophical thinking
- Think back to the question.
- Critically think about your own, and others statements.
- Justify your comments with examples.
- Ask for clarification if you don't understand what someone has said.
- Give examples to support your statement.
- Agree or disagree with statements made by others.

For me, the reason why people take more than they need could be a sense of insecurity. What do you think?

What is enough? What is too much?
I think WE don't know what is enough. For example, when we start collecting things (stamps toys etc) we want to collect them all.We don't notice that what a waste of money it all is, while others are looking at everthing and thinking this is over the top. we don't notice what we've done until we have finshed collecting or got bored.Also about what trish said about the matrix, I think the reason is because if u look at us than other animals u will probaly notice a huge difference! WE take up a lot of the land on earth. Some of us such as superstars (not all!) Buy houses with loads of bedrooms that they don't even need! Got to go got to pack my suitcase! you havent been in the situation to not have what you want for example you ask your parents for a puppy and they straight away say yes.
but some people ask their parents can i have a puppy and they straight away say no.
but think if you swaped around with that person how would you feel.
some people are super rich and somme people are normal with money the people with the normal amount of money have an amount of money to buy clothes,buy food etc
super rich people buy all those things and extra, dogs,china plates and they travel the world.

You are posting some really interesting questions and ideas, well done.
I think that it is interesting,(as you point out), what we want, namely the things we want aren't really that imporatant. A lot of the things you stated are wants, but not needs. Interestingly Holly brings up the point of food and water. Are these the only things we really need? And is everything else merely a want? I think there are definitely others things that we need as humans.

Well it depends what it is and I think that JedI is right about what is enough? And what is to much? If you collect something it can be a wast of money and it will just brake or get lost or even get stolen and that is just a wast of money.

I think the difference between want and need is that need means its what we need want is what we want but don't need.trish is right we do take more then we need but I am still not sure what the difference is between want and need but I can tell you kinda what they mean.
Maybe this is something we could discuss more, what is the difference between a want and a need? Is there a difference?

I think the difference between and a need and a want is that as holly said Who would survive in the jungle? WE don't need swimming pools,when we can just go to the beach. We have toys that we don't need. WE have neckalces that we don't need. A need is something that you can't surive without such as water and food. Today I was reading this book and it had a thing about what YOU would bring if your boat was sinking and you had to go on a life raft. You were allowed to take 5 things off this list it had.I choose a life jacket ,a radio cans ,of spagetti, water and a sleeping bag, while my brother choose a solar powered ps3,3 king size crunchies, 1 BOTTLE OF FIZZY DRINK,6 ps3 games,a sleeping bag and a radio. AS u can see my brother is'nt very smart and is obessed with junk food and ps3. also it is an example of what is a need and what is a want. we don't need a ps3 in a liferaft!! we need food water shelter and a way to contact someone if you are lost.I also agree with lily that people take things they don't need because they don't feel safe. For example: When I went to alabama I felt really unsafe becaus ethere was a lot of people just looking at you as you went pass. In our hotel they had to tell you what to do if someone entered the building with a weapon. we had so many locks that it took 5 mins to lock. When we came back to NZ unharmed I felt really weird how little time it to lock up. This relates to lily because we didn't need that many locks in albama but it there so we could sleep at night. Also sometimes you buy toys just to make sure that you have as many as other people.

Think about how people treat celebrities, and sometimes these people are famous for only being famous. Yet the person walking past us on the street, barely gets a look, let alone a hello.

Hi it's Jedi.Well I think that we are instersed in people who are called super stars because they have a different life to most people EXAMPLE On MTV they have a programme called mtv cribs which shows you their house. Their house is alot more different than our house. I also were thinking this MONEY = FAME.
Most people who are famous usally have ALOT OF MONEY. I also think that we like them is because most of super stars are rather in movies ads progammes or is a music artist. I mean it is kinda like your walking down the street and you suddenly see someone famous ( Casys dad for example ) And you think to yourself "Look its steve price !!! OMG!!!" (I would not think this but Tom would! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!)You don't often meet people that you see playing a rugby game or something else like a movie srtar across the road from you!( Correction for most people you don't. Thats all.

I disagree with Jedi, there are some people who are famous, well should I say infamous, who are not rich. Sometimes people are famous because of negative things too.

i think that some people can be very greedy and if they dont get what they want then they will take more than they need and that is part of my answer and also they just take more than they need because they are just greedy or they are just seeing something and wanting is but it might not be that much use to them and just wasting money and and just taking what they want not what they need.

I think a want is something that people love but is not essential , where as a " Need" is something that is necessary for either life or circumstance.
There are only a few things we actually need and the rest are things we want.
For example;
we need:water,food,shelter,cloths and friends to live.
we want:new cloths,toys, playstation, junk food, fancystuff that has just been relesed or it is new, latest inventions etc. and i think that people who have lots of money (rich) are offen are quite conpetitive and want to have everything that their friends or family etc have.where then people who do not have very much money usually spend their money more wisely on the things they need insted of what they want because they can't afford luxuries.
My Question;
Are peoples wants and needs related to how much money they have?

I think enough is as much or as meny as necessery and I also think that people have diffrent levels of enough so what is enough to me is not necesserly enough to other people so i think enough you can not give a definite answer; for example I love clothes, I never have enough nice clothes and I always want more!
Except in this situation what is enough is when something is complete; for example you are collecting rudgy cards out of chip pakets and you had 49 and you only had one more card to collect which you had been looking for this one card for 5 months now. Yey I found it!! Therefore this is complete , it is ENOUGH!!

I think enough starts at wants
beacause our needs are needs for what we need to keep us alive and healthy but we can never get enough needs because it just keeps on coming to keep us alive i think that Enough starts at wants because every kid want Toys etc
but maybe some needs turn into wants aswell.
Every Kid Needs a friend and food and water and shelter andlove and care butkids also need to go to school and have parents to look up to
